INTERATING FARMING

Ubantu Foundation is working with local bodies and communities in Goa, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and other states to promote integrated farming and sustainable development practices. To reduce the use of chemicals and harmful ingredients in food systems, Ubantu Foundation is conducting research and development work to identify and promote the use of sustainable technologies and processes in agricultural value chain. In addition to this, Ubantu Foundation is also aligning its activities with the key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) like poverty reduction, inclusibve growth, gender equality and ensure access to affordable and renewable energy sources. The key areas of interventions of Ubantu Foundation are summarized below:

1. Training on Integrated Farming: Training on integrated farming aims to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of sustainable and diversified agricultural practices. Integrated Farming Systems involve the combination of various agricultural enterprises such as crop cultivation, livestock rearing, and fishery to maximize resource use and farm productivity. Through these training programs, farmers are being trained to diversify agri-business that not only improve income through multiple sources but also promote environmental sustainability. Farmers are being trained about new techniques where crops and livestock are raised together on the same farm to create a mutually beneficial system. In this approach, livestock such as poultry or goats provide manure that enriches the soil and improves crop yields which also enhances soil fertility and overall farm productivity.

2. Introduction of New Technologies: Introducing new technologies to farmers and cooperatives—such as food processing units, solar drying systems, and off-grid storage solutions—can significantly improve agricultural productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and increase income. These innovations not only enhance food security but also open new income opportunities for farming communities. Ubantu Foundation is focusing on efficient processing and warehousing technologies to reduce post-harvest losses and enhance value addition at source.  Technologies like solar drying and solar-powered warehousing systems are being introduced to improve the shelf life of perishable produce without relying on expensive or environmentally harmful methods. These facilities help to preserve produce under optimal conditions while minimizing reliance on grid electricity. This not only lowers energy costs but also ensures reliable cold or dry storage, especially in remote, power-deficient areas.

3. Gender Inclusion: Gender inclusion is fundamental to achieving social equity and sustainable development. Uplifting women and creating equal opportunities is not only a matter of justice but also essential for building stronger, more resilient communities. When women have equal access to education, resources, and decision-making spaces, entire families and communities benefit.

The Ubantu Foundation implements a range of targeted programs to address the unique challenges women face - social, economic, and structural. These efforts include supporting SHGs, providing vocational training programs, and introducing innovative livelihood models that enable women to become self-reliant and economically active. The Samanvita program currently being executed by the organization in Goa and Delhi has been designed to empower women from the needy sections and build their capacities to earn livelihoods with dignity. This also includes interventions to reduce taboo around menstrual hygiene by organizing awareness programs in colleges and communities and providing access to safe menstrual hygiene products. In addition to this, Ubantu Foundation is helping the women in Delhi and Goa to start their own enterprises and promoting their products through physical events and online business platforms.

Empowering Vulnerable Sections: Committed to building an equitable society, Ubantu Foundation has taken sincere measures to empower Particularly Vulnerable Target Groups (PVTGs), including tribal communities, transgender individuals, Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The Foundation has initiated grassroots interventions through awareness campaigns and vocational training programs. The Foundation is also reaching out to the vulnerable sections to form SHGs and cooperatives, equipping them with entrepreneurial skills and providing training in business development, branding, and packaging, along with market access support. Operating across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Delhi, Ubantu’s initiatives aim to create sustainable livelihoods and bring meaningful transformation to the lives of marginalized communities.
